As part of the 2022 France-Portugal Season, Joana Vasconcelos is exhibiting her "Tree of Life" in the Sainte-Chapelle. Specially created for this place, the Tree of Life stands 13 metres high and its nearly 100,000 black, red and gold leaves were embroidered and woven by hand in her studio.
The artist was inspired by the history of the place: Queen Catherine de Médicis, widow of Henri II, continued the development of the Sainte-Chapelle and the park of the Château de Vincennes by having three thousand elms planted there. The installation also echoes the mythological figure of Daphne, who transforms herself into a tree to escape from Apollo.
